 The MSPA Green IT certification program was created so that MSPs could expand the services they deliver to the consumers in a virtual and remote environment; reducing carbon emissions, energy consumption and significantly reduce costs and increase profit margins; both for the consumer and the service provider.

MSPs who achieve the Green IT certification must be able to demonstrate proficiencies in the following areas:
* Must be an accredited member of the MSPA
* Must be in good standing with the MSPA and abide by the MSPA code of ethics
* Must have a certain percentage of their clients managed remotely
* On-site remediation services not to exceed a certain percentage of total services revenue
* Percentage of trouble tickets must be performed remotely
* Proof of server and/or desktop virtualization implementations
* Data center power saving best practices
o Alternative energy sources
o Server virtualization
o Adoption of alternative data center cooling practices
* Must be able to demonstrate adoption of energy saving practices at client sites
